48V DC Power Architecture for AI Servers: Procurement Guide

A 48V server power architecture can reduce distribution current, but its components must be selected as one power path. Begin with the rack or shelf input specification, then work through protection, conversion, distribution and point-of-load regulation. The nominal bus voltage alone does not define a compatible power module.

Separate the bus from the processor rails

Vicor describes a 48V architecture for AI processor power delivery, illustrating why high-current conversion deserves system-level planning. Different vendors and platforms use different stage arrangements; compare their documented operating conditions instead of assuming that every 48V solution is interchangeable.

At equal delivered power, increasing distribution voltage reduces current according to I = P/V. Resistive loss in a given conductor follows I²R. These relationships help explain the distribution benefit, but converter efficiency, connector resistance and cooling determine the actual system result. Include all conversion stages when estimating losses.

Build a realistic electrical envelope

Record the minimum and maximum bus voltage, startup behavior, allowable transients and expected output load profile. Identify whether each stage needs galvanic isolation and where the return path connects to chassis. Check undervoltage and overvoltage thresholds against the complete operating envelope.

For conversion modules, request efficiency data at representative load points and temperatures, not just a peak value. Confirm remote sensing, current sharing, sequencing and telemetry requirements. A module that meets steady-state output power can still miss a processor's transient requirement or overload the local cooling arrangement.

Include protection and service connections

Specify busbars, mating connectors, cable assemblies, fuses and switching devices using the current and temperature they will experience. Review connector derating and touch-safe installation requirements with the mechanical and electrical teams. A current rating measured under different conditions is insufficient evidence for a dense rack assembly.

Document the response to short circuits, failed converters, interrupted telemetry and removal of a service module. Validate controlled startup into the real downstream capacitance. Reserve space for measurement points so the manufacturing team can check bus voltage, ripple and load sharing without altering the approved assembly.

Frequently asked questions

Can a 48V module replace a 12V module directly?

Usually a redesign review is required. Input limits, output rails, protection, control interfaces, pinout and cooling must all be assessed.

Is higher peak efficiency always the best choice?

No. Compare efficiency across the expected workload, together with transient response, cooling cost, integration effort and the usable output envelope.
