Analog Switch and Multiplexer Alternatives: Signal-Path Checks

Compare analog switch alternatives using signal range, on-resistance, leakage, capacitance, logic thresholds and switching behavior.

An analog switch or multiplexer alternative should be selected around the signal path and its error budget. Channel count and package size narrow the search, but they do not establish suitability for a sensor input, audio signal or precision measurement circuit. Define the signals being routed before comparing product tables.

Map the switch function and voltage conditions

Record the required configuration, including the number of channels and whether each path is single-ended or differential. Identify the highest and lowest signal voltage in normal operation and during startup. Include conditions where a signal is present while the switch supply is off.

The Texas Instruments TMUX1208 provides an example of an eight-to-one multiplexer with bidirectional signal paths and 1.8 V compatible control inputs. Its product information separately describes analog signal limits and control-pin behavior. Keep that distinction in a replacement review: control-input tolerance does not imply that every analog terminal tolerates the same condition.

Budget resistance, leakage and capacitance

Check how on-resistance changes across signal voltage and temperature, rather than comparing only a typical value. In a resistive path, it can contribute gain error; in a precision measurement path, its variation may matter more than its nominal value.

For high-impedance sensors, review leakage and the resulting offset at the actual source resistance. For fast signals, inspect capacitance, bandwidth and crosstalk. A candidate with lower resistance can still be unsuitable if its added capacitance slows settling into the next circuit stage. Allocate an allowable error to each effect before approving an alternate.

Check switching and board implementation

Compare break-before-make behavior, switching time and charge injection. In a multiplexed ADC design, test the transition between the largest positive and negative channel values and allow the signal to settle before conversion. This reveals problems that a static single-channel measurement can miss.

Review truth tables, enable polarity, package pin assignments and the handling of unused terminals. Repeat relevant tests over the application supply and temperature range. Keep a record of the approved candidate, board revision and measurement setup so later purchases use the same qualified configuration.

Frequently asked questions

Does lower on-resistance make a switch universally better?

No. Leakage, capacitance, distortion and switching transients can dominate different applications. Compare the parameters that determine the performance of your particular signal path.

Can a logic multiplexer replace an analog multiplexer?

Do not assume this. Confirm the device’s permitted signal types, voltage range, direction and transfer behavior. A part intended to process digital logic may not preserve an analog waveform.
