CH340, CP2102 and FT232: USB Bridge Availability Guide

Prepare a USB-to-UART bridge RFQ with exact variants, package, I/O levels, driver requirements, device configuration and production test needs.

A request for CH340, CP2102 or FT232 material should use the full device designation, not just a family name. USB bridge variants can differ in package, clock requirements, I/O voltage and configuration features. Check availability against the approved component and keep any proposed migration separate from the original purchase line.

Distinguish the IC from an adapter board

Identify whether the requirement is a bare USB bridge IC, a module or a finished USB serial adapter. An adapter may add a connector, regulator and line-interface transceiver. Its advertised voltage or connector type does not describe every electrical pin of the bridge IC inside it.

Record the exact suffix, package and required UART signals, including flow-control lines used by the application. Match the manufacturer’s pin assignment and the PCB footprint. Avoid replacing a complete adapter specification with an IC part number unless the surrounding circuit is also defined.

Check voltage, drivers and configuration

The Silicon Labs CP2102N datasheet lists multiple package options and configuration functions. CP2102N should be identified explicitly when requested; it should not be silently substituted for a BOM entry naming CP2102. Similarly, consult the FTDI FT232RL product information for the precise FT232 variant being considered.

Compare UART I/O levels, power arrangement, reset behavior and any external clock requirements. Verify driver support for the actual operating systems and software used in production or by customers. Review device identifiers, serial-number behavior and any application that selects an adapter by its USB descriptors.

Define production acceptance

Test enumeration, sustained transmit and receive traffic, flow control, reconnects and suspend behavior on representative host systems. If the bridge controls automatic programming of another processor, verify its reset and boot-control sequence as well as ordinary serial communication.

For purchasing, specify quantity, packing format, required arrival date and whether configuration programming is needed. Ask the quotation to identify the exact offered ordering code and documentation. Keep programming instructions and the approved driver version linked to the BOM when they affect production behavior.

Frequently asked questions

Does USB-to-UART mean the pins can connect directly to RS-232?

No. Check the electrical interface. A logic-level UART connection and an RS-232 line interface are different, and an appropriate transceiver may be required.

Can bridge brands be exchanged without software testing?

Do not assume so. Drivers, device identification, configuration and control-signal behavior can affect the application even when basic serial traffic works.
