EEPROM and Flash Availability: Order the Correct Memory Variant

Prepare EEPROM and serial flash RFQs with density, voltage, interface, package, programming image and lot-specific delivery requirements.

EEPROM and flash availability should be checked against a complete ordering code, not just a memory size. The device must match the board’s supply, interface and software behavior. Keep blank memory purchases separate from preprogrammed material, because programming adds requirements that a standard component quotation may not include.

Separate memory technologies and units

Record whether the BOM requires EEPROM, serial NOR flash or another memory technology. State density in the manufacturer’s units and include the complete part number to prevent confusion between bits and bytes. Document the bus interface and the voltage applied by both the target board and production programmer.

Winbond’s W25Q128JVBIMG product entry identifies a specific serial NOR variant and its voltage information. For comparison, the Microchip 25LC256 documentation describes a serial EEPROM. They illustrate why “SPI memory” is too broad to serve as a purchasing specification.

Confirm the software and package assumptions

Check addressing, commands, read modes, write protection and reset behavior against the application. For flash used as boot storage, verify that the processor’s boot process supports the proposed device. Include any assumptions about identification values, dummy cycles or configuration registers in the review.

Match the package drawing, pin functions and exposed-pad requirements to the approved PCB. If an alternate package is offered, have engineering evaluate the change before ordering production material. A common pin count does not establish matching dimensions or assembly compatibility.

Define programming and shipment acceptance

For preprogrammed devices, supply a controlled image version and checksum, and define the verification procedure. Identify device-specific data, protection settings and any permitted reprogramming. Confirm whether the quoted material is blank or programmed; neither condition should remain implicit.

Provide evaluation and production quantities separately, together with the required delivery date. Request packing format, lot identification and applicable documentation. Link the accepted quotation to the approved firmware and hardware revision so later repeat purchases preserve the same configuration.

Frequently asked questions

Can a larger serial flash be used when the original is unavailable?

Only after boot compatibility, addressing, commands and package details are reviewed. Extra capacity does not establish a compatible memory device.

Does reading a device ID prove that programming is correct?

No. Verify the intended image and configuration, then test the programmed part in the target system. Device identification is only one step in acceptance.
