JST PH and XH Connector RFQs: Specify the Complete Mating Set

Prepare JST connector requests with exact PH or XH series parts, circuit count, header orientation, contacts, wire range and mating requirements.

A JST connector request should identify the series and every part in the mating assembly. “JST plug” is too broad to define a purchasing item. For PH or XH connectors, specify the housing, PCB header and contacts separately, then confirm availability for each exact ordering code and required quantity.

Verify pitch, series and circuit count

JST’s PH documentation identifies a 2.0 mm pitch, while its XH documentation identifies a 2.5 mm pitch. That distinction matters when identifying an existing connector. A photograph or a rough measurement should be followed by a comparison with the manufacturer’s drawing.

Record circuit count, keying, latch arrangement and the intended mating part. Check whether the PCB header is top-entry or side-entry and whether it uses through-hole or surface-mount attachment. Similar-looking housings from different series should not be treated as compatible without documented mating information.

Include contacts, wire and tooling

Specify the contact part number and confirm the supported wire size and insulation diameter. Include plating and material options where the application requires them. A housing quotation alone does not define the contacts or the finished cable assembly.

For crimped leads, identify the required tooling and assembly acceptance process. Review conductor preparation, crimp dimensions and retention testing with the responsible manufacturing team. If buying a completed harness, provide the pin-to-pin wiring, wire length, color and any label requirements as part of the controlled drawing.

Review ratings and the complete installation

Compare the connector’s electrical limits under the stated wire and temperature conditions. Check mating clearance and cable routing in the enclosure, including strain on the connector during assembly or service. Qualify the complete mating pair rather than evaluating one loose component in isolation.

In the RFQ, list each component and quantity, packing format and required arrival date. Ask for the offered manufacturer ordering codes and applicable documentation. If an alternative brand is proposed, keep it separate until mechanical fit, contact performance and the assembly process have been approved.

Frequently asked questions

Are PH and XH interchangeable?

No. Their documented series dimensions and mating components differ. Specify the approved series and exact counterparts rather than relying on the broad JST name.

Does a housing part number include crimp contacts?

Do not assume so. Confirm the quotation’s deliverables and list contacts, headers and housings separately unless a defined assembly includes them.
