LED Driver IC Alternatives: Current, Dimming and Fault Checks

A replacement LED driver must fit the power topology and the LED string's operating range. The same package or nominal current rating does not establish a drop-in alternative. When a verified discontinuation notice requires a change, review the complete driver circuit, including sensing, magnetics, dimming and protection.

Match the topology and operating envelope

TI's TPS92512 documentation describes a buck current regulator with separate analog and PWM dimming inputs. It illustrates why topology and control method are defining selection criteria. A buck driver cannot be treated as interchangeable with a boost or isolated driver simply because the advertised LED current matches.

Record minimum and maximum input voltage, LED count, forward-voltage range and required current. Include temperature effects and production variation in the LED string. Check available regulation headroom across those conditions, then compare the driver's voltage limits and startup requirements against the actual circuit.

Review sensing and external components

Compare the current-sense reference and its tolerance, resistor power dissipation and sensing connections. Review switching frequency, inductance, ripple current and the ratings of any external diode or MOSFET. A changed control method or frequency can require different compensation or filtering even when the output current target stays the same.

Confirm analog and PWM dimming ranges, input thresholds, polarity and timing. Evaluate low-brightness behavior with the intended control signal, including minimum pulse requirements and visible artifacts. Preserve the intended relationship between command and light output rather than assuming an existing firmware dimming table remains valid.

Test light output and fault behavior together

Measure LED current, ripple and startup overshoot using the real string and wiring. Check temperatures of the driver, inductor, sensing resistor and LEDs at the expected ambient conditions. Compare electrical efficiency and dimming behavior across the operating range rather than only at maximum brightness.

Review open-string, shorted-string, undervoltage and thermal behavior against the product requirements. Perform defined fault tests using an appropriate controlled setup. Record any revised components, layout, firmware settings and acceptance evidence with the approved alternate. A replacement decision applies to that validated circuit, not every board that used the original driver.

Frequently asked questions

Can a voltage regulator replace a constant-current LED driver?

Not without a suitable current-control design. The LED string's required current regulation and fault behavior must be provided.

Does the same maximum current rating guarantee equal brightness?

No. Actual current accuracy, dimming behavior, thermal conditions and the LED characteristics determine the result.
