MLCC Capacitor Buying Guide: Capacitance, Voltage Derating and Package

2026-06-09 13:32:33

MLCC capacitors are common BOM items, but they are not always interchangeable. Capacitance, dielectric, voltage rating, package size and DC bias behavior can affect circuit performance and long-term availability.

Check capacitance under real conditions

The marked capacitance is measured under specific conditions. In many ceramic capacitors, effective capacitance drops with DC bias, temperature and aging. For sensitive designs, compare datasheet curves rather than only nominal capacitance.

Review voltage rating and derating

Voltage rating should include application margin. A capacitor that meets nominal voltage may still be unsuitable if derating rules require a higher rating. When replacing an MLCC, confirm whether the same voltage class and dielectric are approved.

Compare package, dielectric and tolerance

Package size affects capacitance availability, assembly behavior and cracking risk. Dielectrics such as X5R, X7R, C0G and NP0 serve different needs. Tolerance and temperature coefficient should be checked before approving alternates.

Use approved alternates for commodity lines

Cost and availability can improve when a BOM includes approved capacitor alternates. However, alternates should still match electrical, mechanical and quality requirements. Include preferred brands and acceptable replacements in the RFQ.
