MOSFET Sourcing: Verify Electrical Fit Before Comparing Offers

Compare MOSFET quotations using gate-drive conditions, conduction and switching losses, thermal path, package construction and confirmed supply.

The right MOSFET to source is the one qualified for the circuit’s voltage, drive and thermal conditions. A list of supposedly popular parts does not establish suitability or current availability. Begin with the approved ordering code, then use a structured engineering comparison if an alternate is needed.

Specify the real switching conditions

Record the drain voltage, load current, switching frequency and gate-drive voltage. Include startup and transient conditions as well as normal operation. Identify whether the device operates as a switch, a synchronous rectifier or in a linear region, because those uses place different demands on the device.

Infineon’s MOSFET selection guidance discusses the tradeoff between conduction and switching losses. Translate that into an RFQ comparison by recording on-resistance at the relevant gate voltage alongside gate charge and other switching parameters needed by engineering.

Compare thermal and package details

Check the package drawing, pin assignments and thermal connections. Similar-looking packages can use different lead arrangements or exposed-pad constructions. Review the actual PCB copper area and cooling conditions rather than relying on the largest current number shown in a product summary.

Use the datasheet’s safe operating area for the relevant operating mode and pulse conditions. For a switching replacement, review the driver’s capability and the resulting switching waveform. A lower-resistance candidate can add gate charge and change losses, ringing or electromagnetic behavior. Validate the complete power stage before approving it.

Make offers comparable

Send the complete manufacturer part number, requested quantity, required date and approved packing format. Ask each offer to identify the actual manufacturer, package variant, lot information and delivery basis. Keep authorized alternatives explicit; do not accept a broad description such as “equivalent MOSFET” as a purchase specification.

For sample evaluation, use a representative board and load profile. Measure temperature and switching behavior before scaling the order. Record the approved gate resistor, driver and protection components alongside the MOSFET so production does not combine a new device with an unreviewed circuit configuration.

Frequently asked questions

Is gate threshold voltage the required drive voltage?

No. Use the datasheet’s specified operating and on-resistance conditions to assess the available gate drive. The threshold parameter does not establish full enhancement at the application current.

Does a higher voltage rating make a better replacement?

It can provide voltage margin, but other characteristics may change. Compare losses, capacitances, driver requirements and thermal performance in the actual application.
