Nexperia vs TI Logic: Reviewing 74HC595 Alternatives

A shared logic function creates a comparison candidate, not an automatically approved replacement.

Nexperia 74HC595 and TI SN74HC595 provide a useful example of cross-brand logic selection. Start with the required function, then verify supply voltage, input thresholds, output loading and timing. A familiar logic number alone does not approve a substitution.

Match the function and logic family

Nexperia describes its 74HC595 and 74HCT595 devices as shift registers with an output storage register and three-state outputs. TI describes the SN74HC595 as an eight-bit shift register with three-state output registers. Separate shift and storage clocks allow data to move without immediately changing the visible outputs.

Keep HC and HCT requirements distinct. Review the input threshold tables for the actual supply and driving device. A microcontroller output that looks adequate in a typical bench setup may not meet the guaranteed input-high requirement over voltage and temperature.

Check every loaded output and timing path

List the load connected to each output and the total simultaneous load. LEDs need appropriate current control; relay coils need a suitable driver stage and protection. Use guaranteed output-voltage limits at the specified current rather than treating absolute maximum current as a normal operating target.

For cascaded registers, review clock frequency, propagation delay, setup and hold requirements. Include PCB routing and the timing of the serial output into the next device. Verify reset and output-enable behavior during power-up so external loads cannot enter an unintended state before firmware runs.

Approve the exact package and order code

Compare land patterns, pin numbering, package dimensions, temperature range and packing format. Similar package names may conceal dimensions that affect assembly. Retain the manufacturer's complete ordering code instead of reducing the BOM entry to 74HC595.

Validate the candidate with the longest register chain and largest supported load. Test supply extremes, simultaneous switching and startup sequences. Record which board revision and firmware passed, and add the approved manufacturer code to the alternative list only after the design owner accepts the result.

Frequently asked questions

Can HC, HCT and faster logic families be mixed freely?

No. Their input thresholds, edge behavior and supply requirements can differ. Review the interface in both directions and consider ringing or timing changes before changing families.

Is a successful single-board test enough?

It is useful initial evidence, but approval should cover the permitted supply, temperature, loading and production variation. Define measurable acceptance limits rather than relying on visible LED behavior alone.
