Tactile Switch and Push-Button RFQs: Fit, Feel and Lifetime

Prepare switch quotations with actuator height, force, travel, contact arrangement, rated load, sealing and assembly-process requirements.

A tactile-switch or push-button RFQ should define the mechanical action as carefully as the electrical contact. A part can fit the PCB yet fail to reach the enclosure button or produce the intended feel. Check availability for the complete manufacturer ordering code, including actuator and force options.

Match the enclosure and actuation geometry

Record body size, mounting style, actuator height and direction of operation. Compare PCB hole or pad locations and any locating features. Include the enclosure stack-up so engineering can assess whether the button cap presses the switch within its intended travel.

The OMRON B3U datasheet distinguishes top-actuated and side-actuated versions and specifies operating force and travel. Those are separate selection criteria, not details that can be inferred from the switch’s footprint or a product photograph.

Define the contact and usage conditions

State the contact arrangement, rated voltage and current needed by the circuit. Distinguish a low-current logic input from a switch that directly controls a load. Check minimum applicable load where relevant and verify how the application handles contact bounce.

Specify expected operating cycles and the environment in which the switch is used. Review the manufacturer’s test conditions when comparing lifetime figures. For exposed controls, document any sealing requirement, while keeping component sealing separate from the protection level of the completed enclosure.

Qualify assembly and user operation

Check soldering, cleaning and handling requirements before choosing an alternate. A switch may need a different assembly process even when its electrical function is unchanged. Confirm that the production fixture does not apply excessive travel or side load to the actuator.

Evaluate samples in the finished enclosure and compare force, travel, tactile response and reset after release. Repeat the test at relevant tolerances rather than checking a bare switch alone. For sourcing, state quantity, packing format, required arrival date and the exact approved options, and request lot information with the quotation.

Frequently asked questions

Can switches with the same footprint have different operating feel?

Yes. Operating force, travel, actuator shape and internal construction can differ. Evaluate the completed button assembly against the product’s acceptance criteria.

Does a sealed switch make the whole product waterproof?

No. The enclosure, button opening and complete assembly determine product-level protection. Review the component rating and test conditions as part of that assessment.
