TI vs onsemi Power ICs: Compare the Regulation Job First

A power IC comparison starts with the regulated quantity and operating conditions. TPS5430 and NCP3065 show why voltage regulators and LED current regulators are different choices.

TI and onsemi both offer power-management devices, but a useful comparison begins with the load. A processor supply needs controlled voltage; an LED string normally needs controlled current. Similar input ratings or package sizes do not make the controllers interchangeable.

Define whether you regulate voltage or current

TI describes the TPS5430 as a 3 A step-down converter with a 5.5 V to 36 V input range and 500 kHz switching frequency. It is a candidate for converting a higher DC rail into a lower regulated voltage, subject to its electrical and thermal limits.

The onsemi NCP3065 data sheet instead describes a constant-current switching regulator for high-brightness LEDs, with step-up, step-down and inverting circuit options. Its internal switch current rating is not a promise of that same continuous output current in every topology. These two parts demonstrate different regulation jobs rather than a direct replacement pair.

Write down the full input and load envelope

Specify normal input voltage, tolerances, startup conditions and credible transients. For a voltage rail, add minimum and maximum output current, load-step speed and permitted ripple. For an LED string, provide forward-voltage variation, target current, dimming method and open-load behavior.

A nominal 24 V supply can have startup overshoot or cable-induced disturbances. A low-power standby state can also matter as much as the full-load operating point. Ask the engineer to approve the full envelope before purchasing selects a lower-cost candidate.

Compare the complete power stage

Review the inductor, catch diode where required, sense resistor, input capacitor and output network together with the IC. Their ratings and losses influence efficiency, thermal rise and board area. A controller price comparison that excludes these parts can reverse the apparent result.

Use manufacturer reference circuits as a starting point, then validate the actual layout. Check startup, shutdown, short-circuit recovery and load changes across temperature. Measure hot components after thermal equilibrium, with the intended enclosure and airflow. Record the test conditions alongside the results so another team can repeat them.

Frequently asked questions

Can an LED driver replace a general-purpose buck regulator?

Only if the complete circuit is deliberately designed and verified for the required regulation behavior. Matching input voltage alone is insufficient, and different feedback thresholds, control methods and protection behavior can prevent substitution.

Does a higher current headline mean a better choice?

No. Determine whether the number describes switch current, peak current or continuous output under stated conditions. Board temperature, duty cycle, external components and protection thresholds can limit the usable load.
