Vishay vs Panasonic: Selecting Aluminum Electrolytic Capacitors

Compare the exact capacitor at its operating conditions; brand and capacitance alone cannot establish a replacement.

Vishay and Panasonic offer broad capacitor portfolios. For an aluminum electrolytic replacement, compare the specific series and order code against ripple current, temperature and mechanical requirements. Equal capacitance and voltage ratings do not demonstrate equal service life or circuit behavior.

Choose a comparable capacitor construction

Vishay identifies 146 RTI as a radial aluminum electrolytic series for high-temperature, low-impedance applications. Panasonic's radial-lead electrolytic range includes EEU-FR and other series. These catalogs establish candidate families; selection still requires the data sheet for the individual capacitance, voltage and case size.

Do not substitute a polymer, tantalum or ceramic part merely because the printed capacitance matches. Different constructions can change ESR, leakage, fault behavior and the regulator's stability. Treat such a change as a circuit redesign requiring specific analysis.

Use ripple and temperature to assess suitability

Identify the ripple-current spectrum in the actual converter or filter. Apply the manufacturer's stated frequency and temperature correction rules. A ripple rating at one frequency cannot be compared directly with a rating at another without understanding those conditions.

Estimate the capacitor's operating temperature, including nearby heat sources and self-heating. Use the relevant manufacturer's lifetime method where available. Endurance hours at a stated temperature are test conditions, not a blanket warranty for that many years in any product.

Check electrical and mechanical integration

Review capacitance tolerance, impedance, leakage and permitted surge conditions. Confirm that minimum ESR requirements, if any, remain satisfied in the power supply. Test startup, load transients and ripple with the candidate installed on the production layout.

Compare diameter, height, lead spacing, polarity marking and vent clearance. Check the assembly process and available space inside the enclosure. A capacitor that fits the PCB can still interfere with a cover or place its vent too close to another surface. Preserve packaging and storage requirements in the purchasing specification.

Frequently asked questions

Is a 125-degree capacitor always better than a 105-degree one?

No. Temperature category is one requirement. Ripple capability, impedance, size and endurance conditions may differ. Compare expected operating life in the actual thermal environment using the correct series data.

Can purchasing approve the same value from another brand?

The design owner should approve the exact alternative using electrical, mechanical and production evidence. A value-only substitution can change thermal performance or power-supply behavior.
